What the hail and wind ratings mean

  • DECRA and Westlake panels carry a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating, the top class in a steel-ball drop test.
  • Class 4 means the panel passed that test; it doesn't promise the panel can't dent.
  • DECRA, Tilcor, and Westlake each warrant their panels against wind up to 120 mph.

Roofs stone-coated steel doesn't suit

  • DECRA and Tilcor list a 3:12 minimum slope for most profiles, and some profiles need 4:12.
  • A flat section or a low porch roof needs a different covering.

When stone-coated steel is worth a look

  • You've filed more than one hail claim on the same roof.
  • Your insurer settles your roof at actual cash value, which Arkansas allows for roofs 7 years or older.
  • You want a shake or tile look with steel panels underneath.

How a stone-coated steel roof project runs, from estimate to nail sweep

The installation takes 3–5 days on a typical home, from tear-off to cleanup.

  1. Free inspection and written estimate

Jon Speer, our sales manager, meets you at the house, looks over the roof, and writes up the estimate. If hail started this, we help with the insurance claim at no extra cost.

  2. Pick the profile and the brand

You choose from four profile options, shingle, shake, tile, or barrel, from DECRA, Tilcor, or Westlake. Our guide to tile, shake, and shingle profiles shows how each one looks on a house.

  3. Tear-off down to the deck

We tear off the old roof, so the new metal panels go onto the roof deck and not over worn shingles.

  4. Panels, trim, and flashing

Each manufacturer sets out how its panels and every trim component go on. DECRA fastens some profiles straight to the deck and sets others on wood battens.

Valleys, chimneys, and skylights each take their own trim and flashing pieces.

  5. Cleanup with a nail sweep

We clean up the job and run a nail sweep across the yard before we leave.

DECRA, Tilcor, and Westlake warranties, as each manufacturer publishes them

The warranty on your stone-coated panels is the one the manufacturer publishes. Each one covers its product when it's installed properly, and hail cover applies only when the stone goes through the panel. On top of the maker's, every installation is backed by our lifetime transferable warranty.

Tilcor

Tilcor's published terms match DECRA's. It's lifetime limited for the original owner, with wind up to 120 mph and hail up to 2.5 inches that goes through the panel. It transfers once within 20 years.

Westlake Unified Steel

Westlake gives Unified Steel a 50-year limited warranty that transfers to the next owner and covers wind up to 120 mph. The panels are Class 4 impact rated.

Questions Arkansas homeowners ask about stone-coated steel roofs

Ask Jon anything else at the free inspection, or call the desk.

Answered 24/7(501) 307-1440
Is a stone-coated steel roof loud in the rain?

Not usually. DECRA says the stone coating damps rain noise, so no extra soundproofing is needed. The deck, underlayment, and attic insulation also change what you hear inside in rainy weather. Ask Jon about your attic at the free inspection from Lifetime Construction Builders.

Can you walk on a stone-coated steel roof?

Yes, with care. DECRA designs its panels to be walked on in soft-soled shoes, stepping in the low pans of tile profiles and off the side laps. A careless step, like at the eaves while cleaning gutters, can dent a panel. Lifetime Construction Builders installs DECRA, which prints this in its homeowners manual.

Will insurance pay for hail dents on a stone-coated steel roof?

It depends on your policy. Some Arkansas homeowners policies exclude hail that only changes the look of a metal roof unless water gets in. Check for a cosmetic damage clause before you buy. Lifetime Construction Builders helps with roof insurance claims at no extra cost.

Is my house strong enough for a steel roof's weight?

Usually, yes. DECRA lists its direct-to-deck panels at 1.3 pounds per square foot installed, and Westlake lists Unified Steel at 1.5. Ask Jon about your roof at the free inspection from Lifetime Construction Builders.

How long does a stone-coated steel roof last?

No manufacturer publishes a service-life figure, so the warranty is the written number to go by: lifetime limited for DECRA and Tilcor, 50 years for Westlake. Lifetime Construction Builders installs all three.

Can stone-coated steel go over my old shingles?

Our price includes tear-off, so the new panels go on the roof deck. Arkansas's residential building code doesn't allow a new roof over one that's water-soaked or already has two layers. Lifetime Construction Builders lists the tear-off on your written estimate.
